[:en]Where the future is exclusive, in action this the story began at the Global Forum For High Education and Scientific Research (GFHS) Egypt 8-10 of Dec. 2021. Heliopolis University for sustainable development had the chance to be the one who wrote the golden sentence in this story by attending, acting, and meeting the president Abd El Fattah El Sisi.   Imagine setting in a place where more than 1000 leaders, influencers, researchers, innovators, professors. In the field of scientific research, Innovation, higher education. The themes for GFHS 2021 will revolve around the unavoidable quest of preparing youth for the constantly changing demands of the workforce, taking this opportunity to attend and get the full experience.   This royal event will be held in El Masa Hotel. Where you can meet people from totally different backgrounds, cultures, and criteria who are setting together to share information, the story will not be complete without highlighting the importance of start-ups through a group of highly esteemed speakers, start-ups, executives, and entrepreneurs who will inspire and share their experiences with you.   We and our students are super excited to be part of this royal story. More than 200 students and staff from all facilities will attend this conference to develop, increase their knowledge and convey their experience through attending the workshops and listening to speakers there. Social Initiative forum absolute support  By supporting 45 Startups in 2021, SIF “Social initiative forum” is regarded as an absolute platform for those concerned with achieving Egypt’s vision for Sustainable Development. It was also an excellent opportunity to involve community leaders and proactive stakeholders in supporting new community-based initiatives, as well as giving fresh graduates and the student the opportunity to assist with entrepreneurial projects and maintain the environmental protection culture.  Economy of Love and Social Initiative forum Economy of love, have you heard this terminology? The Hub had six-panel discussions, the contributions of active members in the field of Entrepreneurship, Circular economy, Ethical finance, and what it means to be a responsible Entrepreneur! [:en] التنمية المستدامة والمناخ والبيئة… أسباب التعاون بين جرنتيش وسيكم للتنمية “في جرينيش بنبدأ نعرف إن أحسن حل للبيئة هو إننا نقل من استهلاكنا، للحاجات الضارة على البيئة” بهذه الكلمات عبرت مريم الصديق متطوعة في مؤسسة جرينتش، عن سعادتها بالانضمام لفريق المتطوعين من أجل دعم البيئة والحفاظ عليها وتحقيق التنمية المستدامة لم تكن وحدها التى رغبت في الانضمام لهذه المجموعة بل كان هناك أكثر من مائتي طالب وطالبة رغبوا في الانضمام لتلك المؤسسة، عندما عرضت نشاطها خلال منتدى المبادرات المجتمعية الذي أقيم في جامعة هليوبوليس للتنمية المستدامة في بداية نوفمبر الجاري، ولكن لماذا؟ فهذا ما سنعرفه في السطور القادمة جرينش هي مؤسسة اجتماعية مصرية تهدف إلى تحقيق التنمية المستدامة من خلال الأنشطة التعليمية التفاعلية، وخدمات التقييم البيئي، وتقديم الدعم للمجتمعات المحلية المعرضة للآثار السلبية لتغير المناخ. من خلال العديد من الأنشطة منها ورش العمل وحملات النظافة لنهر النيل وتدريب المدربين على مختلف الحملات التأهيلية للمشاركين فيها للحفاظ على البيئة وجامعة هليوبوليس للتنمية المستدامة تسعى ليكون الطلاب أبطال التنمية المستدامة في مجالات الحياة المختلفة من خلال توفير مكانًا تلتقي فيه الأفكار الجديدة بأرض خصبة للتفكير والبحث ومن هنا تلاقت أهداف المؤسستين في مجال التعليم والتنمية وتحقق الهدف من منتدى المبادرات المجتمعية بتشبيك العلاقات من أجل بيئة أكثر استدامة فكانت اتفاقية التعاون بين جرينتش وهليوبوليس بهدف الحد من الآثار السلبية للتغير المناخي وبتواجد محمد كمال مهندس الصحة العامة والمدير التنفيذي للمؤسسة جرينش وحلمي أبو العيش الرئيس التنفيذي لمؤسسة سيكم للتنمية، سعت المؤسستين لتحقيق المزيد في مجال التنمية والمناخ من خلال وضع خطط لمؤتمر الأمم المتحدة لتغير المناخ 27 والذي سيقام في مصر في عامه المقبل 2022 يذكر أن منتدى المبادرات المجتمعية أقيم في جامعة هليوبوليس للتنمية المستدامة في الثالث والرابع من نوفمبر الجاري، وكان يهدف للتربيط والتشبيك بين الأطراف المعنية من أجل تحقيق خطط أفضل للتنمية المستدامة في محاورها الأربع البيئة والثقافة والاقتصاد والمجتمع [:]

[:en]  Reflections of the Youth on SIF Egypt 2019 Noura Khamees Hamad, 28, Egypt | Early Childhood Educator, Online M.Ed of Innovation in Education at the University of South WalesSIF. Egypt 2019 was a unique opportunity to network with amazing people & learn about great educational initiatives across the globe. The formal & informal discussions that took place were stimulating & uplifting. I could feel that the Forum’s energy was filled with warmth, openness & curiosity. Through the workshops, I was able to view my work from a unique perspective that has helped me to unfold my potential & develop innovative approaches in dealing with children at work & even with myself. The conversations that I had were invaluable in strengthening my commitment to value diversity & sustainability in education & to give back to my community. I am forever grateful to participate in this Forum that revealed the great effort that is being done worldwide inspired by Anthroposophy & the future work needed to continue Rudolf Steiner’s legacy.         Magdalena Ries, 31, Germany | Experiential Educator & Changemaker I traveled all the way from Germany to Egypt to take part in SIF Egypt 2019 hosted by SEKEM. Since I was in a Waldorf school, I have been interested in getting to know this visionary project in the desert. I have always wanted to find out how Anthroposophy can contribute to global challenges & changes in a healthy, human way. So it was super interesting to experience SEKEM, to meet all these engaged people from all over the world, & to explore together how individual potential can be unfolded for the future. I got really inspired by what is already being done in this field. However, one big question is left & still forms a big question mark inside me. What is the new that wants to emerge for the future? What is the impulse of the youth to create a new future? How can we really empower everybody to speak up, to dream, to share their visions & their personal struggles? I deeply believe that we need to look at all these aspects if we really want to see the whole picture of “potential for the future”. We need to include the periphery & empower the center! Here I feel a deep wish inside my heart that we practice to listen, to be aware of each other, & to be courageous to create soul spaces – spaces where everybody feels safe, seen. [:en] Last Thursday, the World Future Council Members, three Alternative Nobel Prize winners, government representatives from Egypt and Germany, scholars, experts in the field of agroecology, and international associations’ heads got together in a conference which took place in Heliopolis University to discuss solutions for scaling up agroecology. But what does agroecology actually mean? The definitions are wide, but what is more important than agreeing on definitions, is that the world food system is  able to feed 7.7 billion people but there are still more than 800 million people who go hungry. This is what Dr. Jean-Marc Faurès, Regional Program Leader, and FAO Regional Office for the Near East and North Africa, focused on during his presentation on agroecology. The agroecology system among others aims to transform the food system according to ecological and sociocultural principles and contexts  Several keynote speakers explained how they were putting agroecology in practice, even unaware of the term and its definition. “I discovered that I’m in the field of agroecology, while I had only relied on common sense!” said Auma Obama, Councilor at World Future Council and Director of the Sauti Kuu Foundation in Kenya. Outstanding practices in Agroecology Several initiatives have presented their approach. Hence, Helmy Abouleish showcased  the holistic work of SEKEM within the four main dimensions of life, explaining: “Compost was a huge factor in revitalization desert land, but that wasn’t the miracle. The miracle needed the Economy of Love to govern in a fair, sustainable and beneficial way. Even then, that wasn’t enough because without the unfolding of individual potential, a community cannot develop and the other way around.” Some of the other initiatives were the “100% organic state” of Sikkim in India which won this year’s “Oscar for best policies” (the Future Policy Gold Award), the start-up Technology for Agroecology in the Global South (TAGS), Farmer Managed Natural Regeneration in Niger and Sauti Kuu Foundation in Kenya. Through these initiatives, it was explained that for a sustainable agroecology, there’s a need for development in financial, technical, organizational and practical approaches. “For greening landscapes, mindscapes need to be greened first,” as Tony Rinaudo, 2018 Right Livelihood Award winner expressed.   The conference aimed to identify the challenges of scaling up agroecology to face them, and to support policy makers in solving those challenges. One of the suggested solutions was to direct the prices of products to their real production costs. “Organic agriculture and products cost less than their conventional counter if all the external costs as for instance for environmental pollutions are considered We need to educate people on the true cost accounting and for that to happen, everyone needs to take responsibility and play a part,” explains Helmy Abouleish. [:en] [wonderplugin_slider id=23]   The Faculty of Pharmacy  at Heliopolis University held its First Annual Conference on Sustainable Development in Pharmaceutical Sciences (HU-SDP) on December 22nd in the university campus in Cairo. The conference hosted a number of high-profile professors, researchers, and entrepreneurs. The conference started with welcoming speeches by Dr. Mohamed Yousri Hashem, Heliopolis University President and Dr. Gouda H. Kamel, Faculty of Pharmacy Dean. The speakers raised many critical national and international issues related to pharmacy legislations in Egypt, quality assurance in pharmacy, gene therapy, green chemistry and sustainability, education for sustainable development, and contract research. On the sidelines of the conference, two workshops were held for interested participants. The first was organized by HU Alumni Unit under the title “Self Learning” and was facilitated by D. Manal Emam, a Lecturer of Education Sociology. The other workshop “CV Writing” was presented by Nour Elmahdy. In addition, posters were presented by contributing researchers and students and were reviewed by the scientific committee members. The conference was concluded with a number of recommendations: Establishing urgently a communication channel with different parties in the field of pharmaceutical sciences to exchange knowledge and experience. Utilizing sustainable development in the field of pharmaceutical sciences will greatly contribute to the reduction of drug monopoly. [:ar] [wonderplugin_slider id=23] اختتمت فعاليات المؤتمر الأول للتنمية المستدامة في العلوم الصيدلية الذي نظمته كلية الصيدلة بجامعة هليوبوليس للتنمية المستدامة برعاية وحضور الدكتور يسري هاشم، رئيس الجامعة. ترأس المؤتمر الأستاذ الدكتور جودة كامل عبد الباري هلال عميد الكلية والأستاذ الدكتور صلاح عبد الله وكيل الكلية كنائب رئيس المؤتمر. ضم المؤتمر عدداً من المتحدثين المتخصصين من باحثين وأساتذة ورواد أعمال في المجال الصيدلي. سلط المؤتمر الضوء على الجديد في العلوم الصيدلية وتمت مناقشة العديد من الموضوعات كالتشريعات المتعلقة بالصيادلة في مصر ومراقبة الجودة في المجال الصيدلي والعلاج الجيني و العلاجات ضد الشيخوخة والكيمياء الخضراء والاستدامة وغيرها. ضم المؤتمر ضمن أجندته ورش عمل لتطوير المهارات الفردية للطلبة حول التعلم الذاتي وكيفية كتابة السيرة الذاتية. كما تم تقديم ما يقرب من 30 ورقة بحثية قام بتقييمها عدد من الأساتذة الجامعيين الكبار. في ختام الجلسات أعلن الدكتور جودة هلال التوصيات التي أسفرت عنها تلك الجلسات، وتركزت في ضرورة التواصل مع الأطراف المختلفة بمجال العلوم الصيدلية لتبادل المعرفة والخبرات بما يحقق التقدم في مجال العلوم الصيدلية، وكذلك التنمية المستدامة في مجال العلوم الصيدلية تعتبر من أهم ركائز استحداث استخدامات جديدة للأدوية بما يساهم في الحد من الاحتكار. وتناولت التوصيات التركيز على تطبيق مفهوم التنمية المستدامة في مجال التصنيع الدوائي لما لها من تأثيرات فعالة في خفض التكلفة العلاجية وما يترتب عليه من توفير الأدوية لكافة فئات المجتمع، وأيضا ضرورة انعقاد هذا المؤتمر بشكل سنوي لدراسة ما تم وتحديد المتطلبات المستقبلية في مجال العلوم الصيدلية وتطبيقاتها. [:en] [wonderplugin_slider id=19]   In cooperation with the Austrian Development Agency and SEKEM Energy Sustainable Solutions, Heliopolis University hosted the international conference “PV Applications in Egypt: Strategies to Meet the Challenges of the Future.” International experts and researchers have participated in the conference to share interesting experiences and developments about Photovoltaic (PV) projects and in Egypt. Especially the variety of different types of PV applications and their specialties were in the focus of the discussions. The conference started with a welcoming speech by Helmy Abouleish, SEKEM CEO and Heliopolis University Chair of the Board of Trustees. He emphasized the fact that as Egypt is facing current and future challenges related to energy, such conferences are very important to guide us towards a better future. Moreover, Mr. Abouleish pointed out that Renewable Energies play a key role in the Sekem Vision of 2057 and his willingness proceeding with the ongoing shift from fossil fuels towards renewables within Sekem institutions, starting at agriculture fields but also as part of all education facilities and in the supply of the processing industries. “As fuel and electricity prices are dramatically rising up, there is no other way than PV applications not only for lighting houses but also in both water and agriculture sectors.” Rasha Elkholy. With the help of Prof. Hani Sewilam (RWTH Aachen University) as a facilitator, the conference started with a session by Dr. Rasha Elkholy (Heliopolis University Vice President and Dean of Engineering). She showcased the projects and training programs that were implemented within Heliopolis University campus in the field of PV applications and systems. “We want to pave a way for a resilient PV sector in Egypt through a holistic, demand adapted system approach.” Birgit Birnstingl Birgit Birnstingl and Michael Puttinger from Sekem Energy GmbH also presented their vision for sustainable photovoltaic solutions in Egypt based on their experiences e.g. in Wahat. Their current efforts include technology adaptation (review of installed systems), R&D, knowledge transfer, and training. The conference included several sessions that tackled different aspects of the same challenging issue. Researchers and experts from both the public and private sectors around the world shared their experiences in Egypt related to PV applications. Education and vocational training was one of the main aspects discussed in the first session of the conference. On that occasion, training completion certificates were handed to the participants of the TOT Photovoltaic Technicians training course that was organized by Sekem Energy and realized by BFI Burgenland. With an interesting presentation about a building integrated PV application closed the first session. Following a coffee break sponsored by PVP- Innovative high performance Glass modules, made in Austria a second session started about framework for PV applications in Egypt and varieties of possible finance schemes for foreign and local investors. [:en] Heliopolis University for Sustainable Development in coordination with the Ministry of Water Resources and Irrigation held a special session during Cairo Water Week that took place from 14-18 October. The session discussed issues related to water, food, and energy. The session was facilitated by Dr. Rasha Al-Kholy, Vice President of Heliopolis University and Dean of the Faculty of Engineering, Prof. Dr. Hani Sewilam – Director of UNESCO Water Chair, Head of Hydraulics Department at Aachen University, Germany, and Member of Heliopolis University Board of Trustees, Prof. Ayman Abu-Hadid – Former Minister of Agriculture, Prof. Mohamed El Khayat – Chairman of the New and Renewable Energy Authority, and Prof. Hossam Shawky – Director of Water Desalination Research Center. The session aimed to emphasize the role of communities in linking education with applied scientific research, industry, and community service and adopt water, energy and food security methodology at all levels of education, innovation, and research to ensure sustainable development. The session was initiated by Dr. Rasha Al-Kholy who introduced the role of Heliopolis University in raising awareness about research and application. Prof. Sewilam then presented the experience of the American University in Cairo (AUC) with MSc and PhD. students using the osmosis system and the multiple applications that made use of the output in agriculture. Also Prof. Abu-Hadid spoke about Egypt’s crisis in regard to irrigation water, the climate changes in the Delta area, and the excessive irrigation in some areas. Dr.  El Khayat reviewed Egypt’s sustainable energy strategy and its pilot projects. As for Dr. Shawky, he talked about the scientific and research development achieved for the local manufacturing of desalination units and membranes and the use of mobile units for remote areas. The Faculty of Engineering team then started their speeches. Dr.Tamer El Gohary, Dr. Heba Mosallam, and Dr. Amr Sobhy shed the light on three projects the Faculty of Engineering is currently working on. The first project is to connect water and energy systems following Egypt’ strategies, and to implement the first experimental aquaponics using hydroponics, desalination of groundwater, solar energy, and fish farming. The second project is the use of wastewater in incubation and generation of algae to make therapeutic medications. The third is lifting water in lakes using solar energy. The main issues discussed were: – Reducing energy used in reverse osmosis by applying forward osmosis. – Using agricultural cropping systems to reduce evaporation from irrigation and increasing productivity of the same areas if traditional methods of irrigation were used. – Using renewable energy is insufficient to reduce fuel consumption but to implement energy efficiency in all buildings. – Enhancing training programs and raising awareness are the primary responsibility of different governmental sectors. – Manufacturing of some parts of desalination plants is the coming challenge to overcome water and energy scarcity. The Faculty of Engineering team including Nesma Rashwan and Mustafa Osama participated in organizing the conference sessions, receiving guests from different ministries and embassies of Arab and foreign countries, and attending lectures.  [:ar]  قامت جامعه هليوبوليس للتنمية المستدامة بالتنسيق مع وزارة الموارد المائية والري بعقد جلسة مميزة ضمن فعاليات أسبوع القاهرة الأول للمياه عن منظومة المياه والغذاء والطاقة. وقد ترأست الجلسه أ.د رشا الخولى – نائب رئيس جامعة هليوبوليس وعميد كليه الهندسة وكانت من أبرز المتحدثين. كما شارك في الجلسة أ.د. هاني سويلم –مدير كرسي اليونسكو الجامعي للمياه و ورئيس قسم الهندسة الهيدروليكية في جامعة آخن بألمانيا وعضو مجلس أمناء جامعة هليوبوليس و أ.د. أيمن أبوحديد – وزير الزراعة الأسبق و أ.د. محمد الخياط – رئيس هيئة الطاقة الجديدة والمتجددة و أ.د. حسام شوقى – مدير مركز بحوث تحلية المياه. تم في البداية عرض أهداف الجلسة وكانت كالآتي: الـتأكيد على دور المجتمعات في ربط التعليم بالبحث العلمي التطبيقي والصناعة وخدمة المجتمع. اعتماد منهجية المياه والطاقة والأمن الغذائي على جميع المستويات التعليمية والابتكارية والأبحاث لضمان التنمية المستدامة. وقد استهلت الجلسه د. رشا الخولي بدور جامعة هليوبوليس في رفع مستوى الوعي بالبحث والتطبيق ، ثم تحدث د. هاني سويلم عن تجربة الجامعة الأمريكية بالقاهرة مع طلاب الماجستير والدكتوراه باستخدام نظام التناضح الأمامي والتطبيقات المتعددة من أجل استخدام الناتج في الزراعة. كما تحدث د. أبوحديد عن مشاكل مصر في مياه الري وأزمة التغير المناخي في مناطق الدلتا والإفراط في الري في بعض المناطق ثم تحدث د. الخياط عن استراتيجية الطاقة المستدامة في مصر واستعراض المشاريع الرائدة. أما د. شوقي فقد تحدث عن التطور العلمي والبحثي في ​​التصنيع المحلي لوحدات التحلية والأغشية المحلية واستخدام الوحدات المتنقلة للمناطق النائية. وقد تلى المتحدثين الخارجيين فريق عمل كليه الهندسة بالجامعة وهم د. تامر الجوهري ود. هبة مسلم ود. عمرو صبحي ليلقوا الضوء على ثلاثة مشاريع رائدة تنفذها الكلية أولها عن ربط منظومة المياه والطاقة في ضوء استراتجيات الدولة وتنفيذ أول اكوابونيكس تجريبية للاستزراع بدون تربة وبتحلية مياه جوفية باستخدام الطاقة الشمسية مع الاستزراع السمكي وثانيها استخدام ناتج المياه العادمة في تحضين وتوليد الطحالب والتي تستخدم في الأدويه العلاجية فائقة الجودة وكأعلاف سمكية وثالثهما عن رفع المياه السطحية في البحيرة باستخدام الطاقة الشمسية. ومن أهم قضايا النقاش: – تقليل الطاقة المستخدمة في التناضح العكسي عن طريق تطبيق التناضح الأمامي. – استخدام نظام الصوب الزراعية في المحاصيل لتقليل التبخر الناتج عن الري وزيادة إنتاجية المناطق نفسها عن استخدام الطرق التقليدية للري. – إن استخدام الطاقة المتجددة لا يكفي لتقليل استهلاك الوقود الأحفوري ولكن لتنفيذ كفاءة الطاقة في جميع المباني. – زيادة التدريب والتوعية هي المسئولية الأساسية للقطاعات الحكومية المختلفة. – سيكون التصنيع المحلي في أجزاء محطات تحلية المياه هو التحدي القادم للتغلب على ندرة المياه والطاقة. أما بالنسبة للرسائل الرئيسية للجلسة: –  الابتكار في أساليب وتكنولوجيا تحلية المياه. – التصنيع المحلي لوحدات تحلية المياه. – تعزيز وتحسين نظام الري. – أبحاث طرق التحكم في البخر الزراعي.  – دعم المشروعات الصغيرة. بالإضافة إلى تسهيل عمليات التصنيع المحلية واستبدال المنتجات المصرية بدلاً من الاستيراد في السوق كنهج مختلف للقطاعات الحكومية المصرية. وقد ساهم فريق من طلبة كلية الهندسة يترأسهم المهندسة نسمة رشوان و المهندس مصطفى أسامة في تنظيم المؤتمر واستقبال الضيوف من الوزراء و سفراء الدول الأخري العربية و الأجنبية وكذلك حضور المحاضرات والجلسات المختلفة وتوقيع الاتفاقيات.  [:]

[:en]In cooperation with the World Future Council (WFC), Heliopolis University for Sustainable Development hosted a high-level conference under the title: “Solutions for Land, Soil and Food in Africa”. On April 24, the event took place at the university campus in Cairo and received a huge media attention. International experts and high-profile guests, among them Dr. Auma Obama, Director of the Sauti Kuu Foundation, Monique Barbut, Executive Secretary of the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification and the Egyptian Minister for Water management, Dr. Mohamed Abdel Aty came together and worked on a declaration about the sustainable development of lands, soils, and food production in Africa. Common declaration for sustainable agriculture in Africa The declaration calls for concerted actions that should be built on synergies between international and national policies, aligned with the global agenda 2030 and its 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) – precisely, to help achieving goal number 15 “Life on Land”. The declaration also includes creating a supporting environment that fosters sustainable entrepreneurship, education models addressing current and future challenges, as well as empowering the civil societies and research bodies. “We should humble ourselves and go back to the soil.” Dr. Auma Obama, World Future Councilor and Founder and Director of the Sauti Kuu Foundation By a warm welcoming speech, the University Chair of the Board of Trustees and SEKEM’s CEO Helmy Abouleish inaugurated the event. He emphasized that agriculture is part of the challenge, as well as the solution. “Not only large organizations, but also each one of us is a part of the solution,” said Abouleish, the recently chosen UN-Champion for facing climate change.  “We will sign a declaration that calls for adopting global sustainability policies at all levels, covering the social, cultural, economic and ecological dimensions of sustainable development.” In this context, Helmy Abouleish welcomed the first conference speaker, Dr. Auma Obama, World Future Councilor and Founder and Director of the Sauti Kuu Foundation. “According to latest reports, the healthiest people are living in the poorest countries of Africa, because they directly eat from the soil,” Dr. Obama stated. “We should not be arrogant but humble ourselves and go back to the soil. The more we have, the more we destruct ourselves.” In her inspiring speech, Dr. Auma Obama also asserted on the urge to “work collectively for creating a safe world for our children and grandchildren.” Land degradation and climate change will force 65 million Africans to migration and flight Among the conference speakers was also Monique Barbut, Executive Secretary of the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD). In her speech, she referred to the burning issue in Africa, stating that if the land continues to be degraded, the climate keeps changing, and the population continues growing, 65 million African people will be forced to immigrate to North Africa and Europe during the coming 15 years. “Although the picture is gloomy, we still can make it a bright one,” she asserted. Barbut also highlighted the initiative “3 S” launched by the UNCCD and implies to “Sustainability, Stability, Security”, as key solutions for the current socio-economic issues in Africa. At the national level, the conference was also attended by Dr. Mohamed Abdel Aty, the Egyptian Minister of Water Resources and Irrigation and Vice President of the African Ministers’ Council on Water (AMCOW). The Minister emphasized on the Egyptian vision 2050 that is currently developed in the sector of water resources management, based on four pillars: water quality improvement, water use efficiency, water resources development and creating a supporting environment in this regard. “Agriculture is part of the challenge but in the same time the solution.” Helmy Abouleish Entitled “The Miracle of Merere”, a documentary was introduced to the conference by Alexandra Wandel, Director of the World Future Council Foundation which also convened the Future Policy Award 2017 for combating desertification. The documentary shows the vast landscape and livestock of Merere, an Ethiopian village – a small miracle created by the  local community in cooperation with their government and donor funded programs. The World Future Council is a charitable organization which researches, identifies and spreads policy solutions that contribute to sustainable development. SEKEM Founder Dr. Ibrahim Abouleish had been a co-founder and one of the WFC councilors. His son, Helmy Abouleish has been elected as World Future Councilor in November 2017. “We have worked for years with SEKEM and HU on promoting sustainable agriculture and water resource management in Egypt,” Sebastian Lesch, Head of German Development Cooperation at the German Embassy Furthermore, a huge recognition for SEKEM and Heliopolis University was expressed during the official event by Sebastian Lesch, Head of German Development Cooperation at the German Embassy in Cairo: “We have a long relationship and worked a lot together on promoting sustainable agriculture in Egypt.” He also pointed out how the Egyptian youth has the best potential for the future and should be empowered by innovative education programs which will bring huge benefits to the country. International experts together for a change The international conference ended up after conducting an open discussion between the audience and three experts: Abdelkarim Sma, form the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD),  Hans Herren, President of Millennium Institute and Recipient of the Right Livelihood Award and Lothar Fickert, Professor Emeritus at Graz University of Technology. The discussion was moderated by Dr. Hani Sweilam, member of Heliopolis University Board of Trustees and Director of the Hydrology Department at RWTH Aachen University, Germany. The talk mainly addressed the problems facing agriculture in Africa, and how to integrate the principles of Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) into national education systems. As Land for Life award winner, SEKEM believes that combating desertification and land degradation is a key element for achieving the SDGs when they are considered holistically and the young generations are integrated through curricula based on the principles of sustainable development. Heliopolis University, SEKEM’s educational entity, is based on the concept of Sustainable Development and it is one of the parties that signed the declaration led by the WFC. Such collaboration will hugely contribute to empowering the current generations via strategic plans and help tackle future challenges in an early stage.
