Heliopolis University for Sustainable Development successfully conducted a Smart Farming
workshop on April 20, 2024, as part of the SustInAfrica Project, funded by the Horizon 2020
Research and Innovation Programme (Grant Agreement No. 861924). The event aimed to
promote sustainable intensification of food production through resilient farming systems across
West and North Africa.
The workshop gathered agriculture engineers and extension service providers, focusing on
innovative smart farming tools designed to enhance productivity, reduce operational costs, and
minimize environmental impact. Key topics included precision irrigation, data collection using
DeltaOhm software, and hands-on training with weather stations.
The agenda featured several prominent sessions:
• Introduction to the SustInAfrica Project by Prof. Ahmed Abdelwahab
• Precision Irrigation and Drought Stress Prediction led by Dr. Sameh Shaddad
• Smart Farming Techniques and Weather Station Demonstration by Dr. Shaddad and
Eng. Hend Elsawy
Participants engaged in discussions about the importance of smart farming technologies,
including soil and crop health monitoring, decision support systems, and data analytics. The
workshop also emphasized the need for precision irrigation to optimize water usage for various
crops.
A total of 54 participants attended, and the feedback from the training was overwhelmingly
