Heliopolis University for Sustainable Development (HU) has reaffirmed its dedication to
environmental stewardship through the updated Policy for the Minimization of Plastic Use,
first introduced in 2021 and newly revised in 2024.
The policy, led by the Rural Development Center, reflects HU’s ongoing commitment to
reducing its environmental footprint and promoting a plastic-free campus. Since its launch in
2021, the initiative has successfully encouraged sustainable practices across the university,
replacing single-use plastics with eco-friendly alternatives.
The 2024 update expands these efforts with enhanced measures, including:
- Increased installation of water bottle refill stations to encourage reusable containers.
- Stronger emphasis on plastic-free events and campus facilities, ensuring biodegradable
or reusable materials are used across cafeterias and functions. - A reinforced sustainable procurement policy, prioritizing suppliers with minimal plastic
packaging. - Broader awareness campaigns and improved recycling systems to educate and engage
students, staff, and visitors.
To ensure progress, HU has established a monitoring committee that regularly assesses plastic
usage and compliance across campus. The policy will continue to be reviewed annually to
integrate new sustainability technologies and community feedback.
With this policy, Heliopolis University continues to set a benchmark in environmental
responsibility within Egypt’s higher education sector—demonstrating that sustainability is not
just a vision
