In line with its ongoing mission to promote environmental sustainability, Heliopolis University
for Sustainable Development (HU) has reinforced its green campus initiatives through the
Policy on Minimization of Disposable Items, first introduced in 2021 and updated in 2024.
Led by the Rural Development Center, this policy supports HU’s long-term vision of creating a
clean, environmentally responsible, and sustainable learning environment. It encourages
students, staff, and visitors to adopt responsible habits that reduce waste and limit the use of
single-use disposable items.
The policy outlines several key actions, including:
- Setting clear objectives to reduce disposable items across campus and monitor progress
toward measurable goals. - Promoting eco-friendly alternatives such as biodegradable, compostable, and reusable
materials in place of single-use products. - Enhancing education and awareness programs through workshops and campaigns to
inform the university community about the environmental impact of disposable items. - Implementing sustainable procurement guidelines that favor suppliers and vendors who
align with the university’s environmental goals—particularly in the cafeteria and food
service areas. - Strengthening waste management and recycling systems, ensuring easy access to
recycling facilities and proper waste disposal methods. - Encouraging internal practices that reduce disposable use, including the adoption of
reusable utensils and containers. - Recognizing and rewarding departments and individuals who contribute actively to
waste reduction efforts.
This policy forms part of HU’s broader environmental responsibility framework, working
alongside other sustainability policies such as the Plastic Minimization Policy and the Ethical
Sourcing Policy. Together, these initiatives demonstrate HU’s leadership in sustainable
development and its role in inspiring Egypt’s academic community toward a more circular and
responsible future.
